Gabriel comes in on red sandals with a white lily held up, his robe still moving from the stride; across the seam Our Lady kneels at her desk, the book open, and lifts one hand. The ceiling is coffered and studded with gold, the walls are veined stone, and a window behind her looks out on a hill town. These two canvases were the outer doors of the organ at Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Venice; the Gallerie dell'Accademia explains that the Annunciation showed when they were shut, and Saints Peter and Paul, the Paul now lost, when they opened. The Italian state catalogue sees in the painted marbles the Miracoli's own interior, finished in 1489. Designed by Giovanni Bellini and probably painted by his workshop. Close the doors, and the room recalls the church.

The panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 22.5 in across, before any gap between frames.
