Saint Jerome kneels in the desert among broken stones, his red hat set down on the ground, his hands open toward a small carved altar. On the left Saint Anthony stoops in the dark with a village burning behind him; on the right Saint Giles prays in his cave. Hieronymus Bosch painted the three about 1495 to 1505, and ColourLex sets them out: Anthony in a nocturnal landscape with a burning village, Jerome praying in the desert, Giles in the grotto where he was shot with an arrow. A site devoted to Anthony's cult sees him by a pond, drawing water with a jug, while demonic presences torment his meditations, and calls Giles's side, under its luminous landscape, the most serene of the three. The Accademia says the triptych came from Domenico Grimani's collections, went to Vienna in 1838, and is held today in Venice. The cave is quiet.
The panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 32.3 in across, before any gap between frames.
