On the closed altarpiece Christ hangs heavy, His hands pulled wide on the beam; Our Lady in white falls back into the arms that hold her, and the Lamb stands at the foot of the Cross. Open it, and the same body rises from the tomb inside a sun. Grünewald painted these nine between 1512 and 1516 for the Antonite monastery at Isenheim, whose monks nursed the victims of Saint Anthony's fire. The Musée Unterlinden describes three views. Closed on most days: the Crucifixion between Saint Sebastian and Saint Anthony. Opened for great feasts, especially the Virgin's: the Annunciation, the angels' concert with Our Lady and the Christ Child, the Resurrection. Opened again so pilgrims and the sick could venerate Saint Anthony. It stood on the high altar until the Revolution and has been at the Unterlinden since 1852. Beneath them all, Christ lies laid out for the tomb.

Hung as the museum describes the object: the closed altarpiece (Saint Sebastian, the Crucifixion, Saint Anthony); the first opening (Annunciation, Concert of Angels and Nativity, Resurrection); the second opening's wings (Saint Anthony tormented, the Visit to Saint Paul); the Lamentation predella beneath. Printed in the object's own proportions: the six 292 cm panels 12 in tall, the two 255 cm saints 10 in.
