Twelve apostles, twelve deaths, and one of them survives. Saint John the Evangelist sits bare-chested in a great pot of boiling oil, placed there before the Emperor Domitian, and as the Städel tells it after the Golden Legend, he remains unharmed. Everywhere else Stefan Lochner, whom the museum calls fifteenth-century Cologne's most important painter, does not shy away from shocking cruelty. Bartholomew lies stretched on a table, flayed alive among soldiers with knives and grindstones. The museum praises the ingenious staging and the realistic detail. The two wings once stood in Cologne's Church of St Lawrence. Across the gold ground the swords and axes go up, men fall, cloaks spill on the grass, and in one pot a man sits in the oil, untouched.
The panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 32.0 in across, before any gap between frames.
