Christ sits on a rainbow, a lily on one side of His head and a sword on the other. Below Him the archangel Michael, in a white robe and a scarlet mantle, holds the scales and weighs the risen; his face, the Hôtel-Dieu notes, is impassive. Four angels announce the Judgment around him, and others carry the Cross, the crown of thorns, the column and the lance. Our Lady kneels in blue at His right. The dead climb naked out of the ground, some toward a golden gate, some into fire. Chancellor Nicolas Rolin commissioned the nine boards, attributed to the Brussels painter Rogier van der Weyden, 1445-1450, for the altar of the chapel of the Great Hall of the Poor. Closed, they showed Rolin and Guigone de Salins kneeling in prayer. The Hôtel-Dieu records that they were opened to the sick only on Sundays and feast days. On those days the sick saw their Judge.
Nine panels in two storeys as at Beaune: three panels either side of St Michael in the lower row, and his tall centre panel rising between the two small upper panels. Printed at one scale, the upper panels are 14 in high and the centre 40 in, as they are to each other on the altarpiece; hung as a row they would lie about the object.
