A metal basin stands on the floor with a jug nearby, and no one is using it. Dalila Rodrigues, writing for the Grão Vasco museum, reads it as the washing of the feet, evoked by the object alone. At the table Christ holds the chalice and lifts a small white Host above it. A man brings in the paschal lamb, she notes; bitter herbs and unleavened bread lie on the cloth, the Passover that prefigures this supper. Judas, in yellow with his money bag, slips out by the opposite door, and a small dog stays, a sign, Rodrigues says, of fidelity against the betrayal. Vasco Fernandes painted it about 1535-1540, and the museum's record says Bishop Dom Miguel da Silva commissioned it for his episcopal chapel at Fontelo. Around the room the feet are bare, and the water waits.
The panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 30.9 in across, before any gap between frames.
