Only the left wing survives. It was made as a diptych — Christ's face on one side, the Virgin lamenting on the other — so this panel is half a conversation, and the half that remains is the one that looks back at you. Blood and tears mingle on the face, and the tears are painted like glass. The gallery ties the type to the devotio moderna, where the object was compassio: not to observe Christ's pain but to suffer it beside him. The Virgin who answered him is lost.
