About this painting

Saint Laurence lies on the iron grid with his feet bare and his eyes on the sky, and the fire is already lit beneath him. A man kneels at the flames with a fork; a chain is about his body; a horseman in a plumed helmet looks down. The MSK's own index for Gaspar de Crayer's canvas names the rest: an executioner, soldiers, a lance, a standard-bearer, an eagle. It files him as the martyr and deacon Laurence of Rome, dead by burning on the gridiron. Above, two small angels come down through the smoke with a wreath and a branch. The index names them first: angels.
