About this painting
The whole square is here so that one kneeling man can be seen. Letha Ch'ien identifies him as Jacopo de' Salis, a merchant from Brescia who knelt as the relic passed and learned on returning home that his son had recovered that same day. Inside the reliquary is a fragment of the True Cross, and the confraternity commissioned a whole cycle of the miracles it had worked. The brothers cross the foreground like a classical frieze, carrying the heavy candlesticks that were among their largest expenses.
