About this painting
It is the most crowded moment in the chapel. Around the two still faces a tumult breaks out — staves, lances and torches crossing against the blue — and at the left edge Peter has already taken hold of a servant and is cutting off his ear. Only John names that servant: Malchus. Giotto painted the whole cycle in roughly two years, finishing around 1305, in a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria della Carità and listed by UNESCO in 2021.
And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.
