A candle burns behind the older woman's raised hand, and the light has no visible source. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes lists what is missing: no halos, no costly drapery, plain clothes, a subject long argued over as an ordinary maternity. The museum reads the hidden flame as suggesting the newborn Christ's divine nature, and names the three as the Virgin, the Christ Child and Saint Anne, a reading settled by comparison with La Tour's other canvases. Isabelle Majorel finds in Mary's young face a dignity and melancholy that foresee her Son's fate, and reads her red as prefiguring His Passion. The Child sleeps, bound in white.
