The young one has not got her gloves off; she holds the open prayer book in bare, reddened hands, a straw hat with a gold band on her head and a white shawl printed with flowers over her bodice. Beside her an old woman in a black headscarf bends over her own book, and behind them a third, older still, kneels in profile with her hands folded, looking at the altar we cannot see. Wilhelm Leibl painted them on a mahogany panel inside the village church at Berbling in Bavaria, over three and a half years from 1878, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, which bought the picture in 1906, records that real countrywomen sat for it, that the three are the ages of life and three stages of prayer, and that he took the figures from Holbein's Madonna of Burgomaster Meyer. The carved pew ends, the dust on them, the stoneware jug on the floor are all there. So is the Mass, going on just out of the picture.
