This panel was itself a reliquary. A cross-shaped case holding a relic of Simeon was fixed to its surface, and the donor — an elderly man with grey curls, marked as a brother of the Teutonic Order — holds a parchment whose rhymed verse says that he shows forth a relic of Simeon here. The relic is long gone. The picture that framed it remains, doing on a wall what Simeon does inside it: holding the holy thing up so that it can be seen.
