Look for the bronze canopy: it is small and far away, down the whole length of the nave under the dome, and the painting leads every eye to it. Above, Giovanni Paolo Panini spread the gilded, coffered vault of Saint Peter's; below, he filled the marble floor with tiny people, clergy in black, ladies in pink and yellow silk, a beggar, pilgrims kneeling at the lower right. The National Gallery of Art reads the arms of Paul V and the year 1615 on the ceiling, the names of early popes on the roundels of the piers, and round the collar of the dome the words of Christ to Peter: Tu es Petrus, thou art Peter, and upon this rock. The picture had a pendant, the Duc de Choiseul leaving the square outside, now in Berlin. The Church keeps the dedication of this basilica on 18 November. The canopy stands over the tomb of the Apostle. The whole church is built on a grave and a promise.
