About this painting

Every ruin in this room began with a good deed. Tobit buried the dead the king left in the street; as he slept, a swallow's dung fell into his eyes and blinded him. His once-expensive tabard is in tatters.

Anna weaves for their bread; the kid she carries in is her wages. Hearing it bleat, Tobit says take heed, lest perhaps it be stolen. His hands are folded not in anger but in prayer: he turns from the accusation and asks God for death.

A birdcage hangs by the window. A bird is why he cannot see it.
