About this painting
This was the centrepiece of a tomb. Cesare Alessandro Scaglia — a Savoyard diplomat who nearly died of illness in 1635 and entered the Franciscans two years later — commissioned it for the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows in Antwerp, with a statue of the Virgin whose heart is pierced standing directly above the canvas. Inside the picture John is showing two weeping angels the nail wound. Mary's arms fly open in an echo of the cross. The altar was destroyed after 1794.
