About this painting
Nobody agrees what the back wall shows: an opening most likely, or a mirror, or a hung picture. The jug settles what matters. Charles Scribner III reads the same earthenware jug, on the maid's table and again in the room beyond, as a footnote — one house, doubled.
The old woman's raised hand, instruction or a scolding for working too hard, is the complaint Christ answers behind her: Martha, thou art troubled about many things. The Gallery allows the pair may be a latter-day Martha and Mary.
Teresa of Ávila had written: the Lord walks among the pots and pans.
