A girl works a pestle in a metal mortar and looks out, unsmiling. Fish, two eggs, a red pepper, garlic, a jug. Behind her an old woman lifts one finger; the National Gallery reads the gesture as instruction, or as a scolding for working too hard, and allows that the two may be a latter-day Martha and Mary. In the opening at the back, most likely a gap in the wall rather than a mirror or a hung painting, Christ sits with Mary at His feet and Martha standing over them. His answer serves every kitchen: Martha, Martha, careful and troubled about many things. Charles Scribner III finds the same earthenware jug on both tables and reads the two rooms as one house, and sets beside it Teresa of Ávila's line that the Lord walks among the pots and pans. Among these pots too.
