The milk comes from a statue. The Prado is precise about it: Bernard receives a jet of milk from a carved Virgin and Child standing on an altar, not from a living apparition. A cardinal watches with his hands joined in prayer — identified since the nineteenth century as Sandoval y Rojas, who as archbishop of Toledo brought the Capuchins to the city in 1611. Portús calls the milk a reward: Bernard had spent his life praising Mary, and this is what the praise was paid in.
