About this painting
The beads are held, not counted. Of its own version the Prado says neither figure fingers them as one reciting the Hail Mary would, which is what makes the rosary symbolic there. Here the Child toys with them, Dulwich's word, so the rosary is in play, not in use.
The counting is left outside the frame. Seen from below, the viewer looks up as if kneeling in prayer. Dulwich thinks it was made for a Dominican church, the drapery glazed in ultramarine, a pigment so costly it was rarely used in Spain.
Nobody knows who paid for the blue.
