A small bird is held high in a small fist, and a white dog sits up on its hind legs to see it. Saint Joseph has the Christ Child standing between his knees and watches Him; Our Lady sits back at her wool, a basket of linen at her feet. Enrique Valdivieso, writing for the Prado, calls the bird likely a gift from Joseph and sees Federico Barocci's Madonna of the Cat behind the dog, where, as the National Gallery in London says, a stalking cat threatens the bird as a sign of the Passion. Here Bartolomé Esteban Murillo lets it be play. The Prado finds Joseph marked by discretion, in a room where the everyday and the sacred coexist: a carpenter's bench, a spinning wheel. In 1746 the royal inventory lists the canvas hanging in their majesties' bedroom. The Child who made the birds is holding one.
