About this painting
One of eight canvases Murillo painted for the Hospital de la Caridad in Seville, a brotherhood that buried the executed and fed the destitute. Six illustrate the acts of mercy. This one is clothing the naked — which is why the richest colour is on the servant carrying the robe, not on the father or the son.
The National Gallery of Art points at what makes it human: the prodigal's dirty feet, the puppy jumping up to greet him, the smile of the boy leading the calf.
Soult took it to Paris in 1812. A copy hangs in its place.
