A small white dog jumps up at a pair of bare, dirty feet, and the old man in the rose-red cloak has already stooped to take his son into his arms. Murillo painted it as one of eight canvases for the Hospital de la Caridad in Seville, a brotherhood that buried the executed and fed the destitute. Six illustrate the acts of mercy, and this one is clothing the naked, which is why the richest colour goes to the servant in yellow who brings the robe, not to the father or the son. The National Gallery of Art points to what makes it human: the prodigal's dirty feet, the puppy jumping up to greet him, the smile of the boy leading the calf. Soult took it to Paris in 1812, and a copy hangs in its place. The calf is already being led in.
