Saint Joseph leans on his staff with both hands and bends toward Elizabeth, and Vasari says he is marvelling that so old a woman should have a child. Below him she kneels, head wrapped in white, looking up at Our Lady, who sits barefoot with a book in her hand. Between them the two children play with a scroll: the Christ Child and the young Baptist, Florence's patron and, in a house like this, a Florentine boy. The Canigiani, Florentine bankers, commissioned it for a home altar. Angels crowd the two upper corners, and they nearly did not survive. Cathleen Hoeniger records that in the early 1750s, in the Elector Palatine's collection, someone scratched at them, failed, and painted the sky over; Hubertus von Sonnenburg took the repaint off in 1982. Raphael's heaven came back after two centuries under flat blue.
