One finger, raised, and the arm behind it bare. The young Baptist sits on a fallen trunk in the wilderness, an animal skin slipping from his shoulder, a scroll unrolling from his other hand toward the grass. His office was to point at a Person, and the Louvre names the painting by where the finger goes: Saint John the Baptist in the desert designating the Cross of the Passion. The gesture passes over the life and names the death. The conception is Raphael's; the INHA record gives the execution, with his workshop, to Giulio Romano or Raffaellino del Colle, about 1516, for Cardinal Adrien Gouffier. His nephew Claude hung it at Oiron and had two coats of arms added at the top: two names above a man whose whole business is pointing away from himself.
