The face shows no strain. Michael comes down with both hands on the lance, wings open, one foot set on Satan's back. Charles Le Brun, reading the painting to the Académie in 1667, made that stillness the point: the arched brows mark his tranquillity, the mouth his contempt for the enemy. Le Brun set the two great wings that hold Michael in the air against the demon's bestial ones, goat's horn, dragon wing and serpent tail, and saw the whole weight that fells him carried on the tip of one foot. Raphael armoured him all'antica, a cuirass of golden scales, Roman rather than modern plate, and Leo X sent him, so armed, as a gift to the court of François I. One foot, lightly placed, is enough.
