The Christ Child stands on His Mother's lap, one arm round her neck, the other hand at her collar, and He looks out while she looks down. Their haloes are gold thread, almost nothing. The National Gallery of Art reads the pair as "tied by interlocking gestures and unified by their shared gaze to a vision of the child's future." Behind them a hill rises to a small domed church. Fern Rusk Shapley's catalogue of the Gallery's Italian paintings thought it probably San Bernardino near Urbino, the town where Raphael was born, and the Brera, which holds that church's altarpiece, records that Federico da Montefeltro built it to house his own grave. Our Lady's hand rests by His bare foot. A grave on the hill; a Child on His feet in her lap.
