The Child's right hand rests above his knee with the thumb and two fingers extended, and Newfields' own catalogue reads that small gesture twice over: a survival of the Byzantine blessing, and a quiet statement of the two natures. Two fingers, two natures, in an infant's hand. The panel is a workshop picture and the museum says so — one of several versions that may all descend from a lost Bellini. Under the paint is extensive underdrawing, the mark of someone thinking.
