About this painting
It hung in a village church for four centuries under another man's name. Grünewald painted it between 1516 and 1519 as the centre of the Maria-Schnee altarpiece at Aschaffenburg — the right wing showed the miracle of Our Lady of the Snows at Rome in 352, and the left wing is lost. In 1532 Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg gave the picture to the Teutonic Order. It was restored, overpainted to suit changing taste, and catalogued as a Rubens until 1908.
