Vasari says imperial troops burst into the workshop while this was on the easel and, stupefied at the work, let him carry on painting. The Gallery prints the story and then offers a drier reading: the soldiers may simply have been baffled by it. Either way the altarpiece was never installed. It was made for Maria Bufalini's burial chapel in Rome and the Sack of 1527 intervened. The Baptist's arm was lit to catch a high window beside the altar, so in the dark church it seemed to reach out of the panel.
