About this painting
Faith, Hope and Charity are not ornament here. They move among the Cuccina, protectively, embodying a virtue the family is credited with: character witnesses. The Cuccina needed them. They had come from Bergamo and made their money in cloth, rich only by the middle of the sixteenth century — merchants, not patricians, and new to the Grand Canal.
At the right edge Veronese paints the evidence: the new palazzo, down to the smallest detail. One floor up is the portego, the hall these four canvases were made for. The house that owns the picture is inside the picture.
