About this painting
In other rosary pictures the Virgin hands Dominic the beads. Here she hands him nothing: she gives an order, and he passes them down to the kneeling crowd. Dermot Morrin OP calls it the Dominican motto: contemplata aliis tradere, handing on the fruits of contemplation.
The poor reach up; only their hands show, not their faces. The kneeling donor holds up Dominic's cappa, and the museum has him inviting the viewer to shelter with Dominic too.
Antwerp painters, Rubens among them, bought it together for their Dominican church. In 1781 it was handed up to the Emperor Joseph II.
