The column rises behind Christ into the dark, and Rouen's curators see its marbling streaked like wounds while His stripped body is still whole. One man pulls the cord at His wrists, another leans in, and an arm at the edge lifts the scourge. Light from a cellar window falls from above on their gestures; the museum says it gives them a kinetic force, and that they seem more unhappy victims than tormentors. The painting came to Rouen in 1955 under Mattia Preti's name, and Roberto Longhi returned it to Caravaggio. The red mantle lies thrown down, royalty stripped; the white loincloth, the museum notes, recalls the shroud.
