A dead man's arms fall open in the shape of a cross, and one hand is already lifting. Christ stands at the edge, arm out, finger extended; the Dominicans in Scotland see in it God giving Adam life on the Sistine ceiling and Caravaggio's own Christ calling Matthew, and read Lazarus's flung arms as the Cross to come. The Messina museum says Christ's figure is kept in shadow on purpose, the light the protagonist, and that His other hand points to the bones on the ground. Delivered to a Messina church on 10 June 1609, for 1,000 scudi by Susinno's early account. The dark still waits above them.
