An angel stands with his back to us and plays a violin, and Saint Joseph, barefoot, holds the music up for him. On the other side Our Lady has fallen asleep with the Christ Child in her arms. The Galleria Doria Pamphilj sets them apart: the Madonna and Child idealised, in lush growth, and Joseph worn out, yet rapt at the angel. In 1983 Franca Trinchieri Camiz and Agostino Ziino identified the notes as Noel Bauldeweyn's Quam pulchra es, a motet on the Song of Songs dedicated to the Virgin. Matthew sends them by night and records no halt and no music. Caravaggio lets the Mother sleep through her own song.
