The wheel built to break her lies broken, and Saint Catherine leans her elbow on it as on the arm of a chair. She looks straight out, a sword in both hands, a palm along the floor. Imaging from the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza restoration shows that Caravaggio first painted the wheel whole, then painted the break over it; in the Golden Legend an angel shatters the wheels and she is beheaded instead. The museum reads the sword as the instrument of that beheading and the dress as a princess's. The model is generally taken for Fillide Melandroni. The palm lies at her feet.
