A Greek cross is marked on the altar front, and the old man thrown down before it opens his hand. From a cloud an angel leans out with the martyr's palm. The Golden Legend puts Saint Matthew's death here: after the solemnities of the Mass, King Hirtacus sends a tormentor who strikes him from behind as he stands at the altar, hands raised. The Web Gallery of Art reads Caravaggio's moment: a Herculean youth seizes the old man's wrist to hold him still for the death-blow. Two youths crouch at the right, staring. The palm comes down to the same hand the murderer grips.
