About this painting

A skull rests in the friar's hand, and Saint Francis looks into it as into a face. His habit is patched and belted with rope; a cross of two plain planks lies before him. Two versions of this Francis exist in Rome, and from 1908 the Capuchins' one carried Caravaggio's name, until in 1968 a second came to light from Carpineto Romano. The Gallerie Nazionali at Palazzo Barberini, where it hangs on deposit, say technical study found the original there. Rossella Vodret reports pentimenti beneath its surface; the Capuchin copy has none. The skull is lit; the friar bends toward it.
