About this painting

Saint Andrew hangs on an upright cross, roped at the wrists, and a man on our left, back to us, pulls at the rope. Below, a woman in a head covering and a man in glinting armour look up. The knot is where the miracle is. In the Golden Legend Egeas has the apostle bound so that his pain will last; he hangs two days preaching to twenty thousand, and those who would unbind him find their arms of no power. The Cleveland Museum of Art reads Caravaggio's scene as that moment, hands mysteriously paralysed. Andrew's cross, Cleveland notes, is usually X-shaped. This one stands straight.
