About this painting
Gabriel arrives, his face averted, only a trace of red hair visible. Mary has slipped from a wooden chair to her knees beside an unmade bed. The lilies mark her as the virgin Gabriel greets, full of grace, in Luke 1:28.
Darkness closes around them; only the two figures are lit, grace entering a plain room.
Caravaggio painted it near the end of his life. It hung under other names, including Guido Reni's and Guercino's, until François Pariset restored the Caravaggio attribution in 1948.
