An angel comes down on a cloud into a bedroom, lilies in one hand, the other pointing, and Our Lady kneels with her head bowed and her hands crossed. A chair, a bed, a cloth on the floor: the Word is made flesh in a room like any room. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy counts this among Caravaggio's last works and one of the very few by him in France. Henri II, Duke of Lorraine, commissioned it in connection with his marriage to Margherita Gonzaga, for the Saint-Georges chapel in his palace. François Pariset restored it to Caravaggio in 1948. The cloud rests on the floor.
