Specialists have not known where to put this picture since the Met first showed it in 1959. A Neapolitan painted it in 1672, after a trip to Venice, in open homage to Titian — and Giordano was famous for working in whatever manner was asked of him, at speed. What survives the argument is the scale. This is nine feet of altarpiece: Gabriel arrives at the height of a church wall, and a girl's consent is given room enough to be architecture.
