Michael goes down with them. Giordano throws the whole picture into the fall — the archangel calm at the top, and beneath him the faces of angels becoming devils, open-mouthed and contorted. The Kunsthistorisches Museum reads that harshness as Ribera's, the Spanish-Neapolitan court painter whose realism Giordano had absorbed, and reads Michael's colour as Ribera's Venetian palette. Nobody knows which church commissioned it. In the late eighteenth century it was taken from the Minorite Church in Vienna into the imperial gallery.
