About this painting

At the top the Name burns, three letters, IHS, and the whole sky turns toward it. Saints and angels bathed in divine light adore the monogram; below, fallen angels, heretics and vices hurtle into darkness. Princeton's curators trace the ceiling to one verse of Saint Paul: "That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth". Baciccio made this sketch as the working study for his fresco in the Gesù, the mother church of the Jesuits. The museum reads the movement as from darkness into light. Tonight, look up at your own ceiling.
