In Tobit the boy does not know his companion is an angel. Titian gives him wings. Tobias holds a gutted fish; his other hand is closed in the archangel's, who shows him the road. The dog, named twice in the book, watches him. Merchant families ordered such panels when a son first left home, to invoke Raphael's protection. It stood on Raphael's altar in Santa Caterina until the Napoleonic suppressions.
Slit the fish open, the angel had said, keep the gall: it is useful for medicine. The father waits blind at home. The cure is in the boy's hand.
