A boy walks hand in hand with a winged stranger, a fish hanging from his other fist, and looks up into his face. In the story he goes not knowing that he was an angel of God; Titian gives the angel great dark wings. Raphael points ahead. The white dog, which the book sends along with them, sits in the grass and looks up too. The Gallerie dell'Accademia explains the subject as a merchant family's plea for the archangel's protection over a young son's first journey; it stood on Raphael's altar in Santa Caterina until it came to the museum after the Napoleonic suppressions, and the small shield on the ground, read as the Bembo arms, stays a hypothesis. The gall of that fish, the angel had said, is useful for medicine. At home a father is waiting blind.
