The sky is still blue at the top, and everything below it is falling. At the centre, in shining gold armour, Saint Michael the Archangel keeps a calm face; the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium note that his right foot rests on the stomach of the seven-headed monster of the Apocalypse. Around him the rebels come down as natural history: one with the black and yellow wings of a Machaon butterfly, a spiny fish from the Pacific and Indian oceans that fills itself with water when threatened, an armadillo, which lives only in the Americas. Angels in white, with trumpets and swords, drive them on. The museum places the work in Antwerp, when Pieter Bruegel the Elder was supplying drawings to Hieronymus Cock and turning from Italian models to the world of Hieronymus Bosch. They were angels once. They land as fish and butterfly wings.
