A man with a saw across his shoulder walks through the snow, and behind him Our Lady rides a donkey, wrapped in a big blue coat. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium name them Joseph and Mary, come to register for the census ordered by the Emperor Augustus. At the inn on the left a crowd presses to the window; the museum reads the scene there as a financial transaction, one man handing over his money, probably to a tax collector, while another collector fills out a register, and the Habsburg coat of arms hangs on the front of the building. Out on the ice, children skate and play. Pieter Bruegel the Elder signed and dated it lower right, BREVGEL 1566. The donkey keeps walking toward the inn.
