About this painting

The Child lies on the hem of His Mother's cloak on the bare ground, and she kneels over Him with her hands together. Saint Joseph sits apart, barefoot, with his staff. Above, God the Father rides a cloud of winged children, and far below Him the Child lies small on the cloak. The Metropolitan Museum reads the two halves as two debts: the upper to Donatello's sculptural reliefs, the lower to Girolamo da Cremona, who was illuminating choirbooks in Siena. Francesco di Giorgio Martini's halves were separated in the nineteenth century and rejoined only in 1988. Heaven hangs over the ground again.
