The Christ Child lies on a white cloth in a wicker basket and lifts both arms. Saint Joseph folds his hands, Our Lady crosses hers, and neither has touched Him yet. Lorenzo Lotto signed on a block of wood at lower right: L. Lotus 1523. It was long taken for a mousetrap, which Meyer Schapiro read as a sign against the devil. Francesco Colalucci looked closer and found a piece of wood with a mortise at one end, the kind that held the stand of a frame: Joseph's handiwork, he argues, carrying the painter's name, carpenter and artist on one plank. On the shadowed wall behind Joseph, the National Gallery of Art notes, a crucifix already hangs. Above the thatch, three angels crowd round a sheet of music.
