About this painting

Iron and feathers come down together, and the bottom of the sky fills with bodies. The KMSKA places Saint Michael at top center with his sword raised, driving out of heaven a horde of demons led by a seven-headed dragon. He was patron of Antwerp's fencers, one of the city's six armed guilds, and the museum records that the fencers had Frans Floris paint their altarpiece. It sees Raphael and Michelangelo in the angels above and Bosch in the creatures below: curved talons, clawing hands, the head of a wild boar, a grinning goat. Floris signed and dated it 1554 at lower right, among the falling.
