Two things happen in one frame. At the left, Adam and Eve are being driven out of Eden. At the right, under the portico, the angel tells Mary what will undo it. The Prado calls the pairing the damnation and salvation of Humanity. A swallow on the portico arch: the Tuscan Bestiary makes it divine mercy, says Rodríguez Velasco.
The dove comes down a diagonal beam of light aimed at her ear — the Word entering by hearing.
And along the beam that separates the panel from the predella beneath it, worked in gold: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA.
