A swallow sits on the iron rod under the arch, and heaven goes on past it. Out of the gold in the corner a beam runs down toward Our Lady, and the Prado follows the Holy Spirit, as a dove, along it to her ear: the moment of conception through the word of God. She crosses her hands on her breast and bows. At the left, barefoot, Adam and Eve are driven from the garden; the Prado calls the pairing the damnation and salvation of Humanity. To the Tuscan Bestiary, says María Rodríguez Velasco, the swallow meant divine mercy. The Prado records Fra Angelico's greeting in gold below: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA.
