A mitred saint stands in a church door with one hand raised, and a crowned man stops with his hand on his chest. The KMSKA's record has the saint reproaching the emperor's cruelty and making him confess, and names them Romuald and Otto III. Anne Leader disagrees: Romuald was never a bishop and is always shown in white hermit's robes, never a mitre. The work entered the museum catalogued as Ambrose refusing Theodosius; white-clad monks on the hillside path behind, she argues, helped get it retitled. Fra Angelico painted it. The saint's is disputed. The door is not.
