About this painting

A lone angel stands beneath the throne of Christ the Judge, in open gold. Left, the blessed go in a ring of dancers toward Paradise, and right, the damned are driven into Hell. It looks like a triptych, and was not made as one: in the Gemäldegalerie's catalogue Neville Rowley writes that Fra Angelico's work was originally continuous and divided later. Rowley points out an angel pushing a woman in red toward the damned, suggests that Pope Eugene IV and Cardinal Juan de Torquemada, the likely patron, are portrayed, and notes that Pius V had Spranger copy it in 1570. The seat of His majesty is set, and everything below it chooses.
